Royal Kapu Naidu History

Kaapu' or kapu means 'protector' and usually it is taken to be protector of a village or region. (uuru kaapu, praanta-kaapu, palle-kaapu, etc). The Kapus are the bedrock of Andhra Pradesh. They form the largest community in Andhra Pradesh, but as a matter of fact this is a broad grouping and regionally they seem to be of different stocks. All the same it appears they were earlier inhabitants than most other farmers here. According to old tradition the king lists refer to kaapu dynasties ruling in earlier times.

Kapu refers to a social grouping of the sub-castes Munnuru Kapu, Telaga, Balija, Turpu Kapu and Ontari found primarily in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The etymology of the name is variously given as "to protect", "agricultor" , "watchman", or "watching". They are also referred to by the title Naidu ("leader"). Kapus speak Telugu and are primarily an agrarian community, forming a heterogeneous peasant Shudra caste, considered along with the Kamma, Reddy, and Patnaik as the four dominant upper Shudra castes of Andhra Pradesh.

The Kapu community in Andhra Pradesh is predominantly concentrated in the coastal districts, North Telangana and Rayalaseema regions of Andhra Pradesh. They are also found in large numbers in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Chattisgarh, Orissa and some other Indian states as well as Sri Lanka.

Kapu origin seem to be in the earliest inhabitants of the Deccan region who migrated from the North and cleared Forests for Agriculture and built Towns in the Deccan. They are considered to be the Original Aryan Descendants who migrated to South India.

Kapu Community are believed to be the descendants of migrants of the Kaampu tribe from Kampilya (near Ayodhya) and were one of the earliest inhabitants of South India who took to clearing the forests and starting agriculture in the Deccan and of the current day Andhra Pradesh.

Kapu Community are also referred to as the Kaampu tribe in the ancient text, which was also referred to as the Kossar tribe, who some historians believe established the Satavahanas and other ancient dynasties.
